Mercedes-Benz has unveiled the highly anticipated second generation of its flagship sports car on August 18th in Carmel, California. The 2024 AMG GT coupe arrives in two distinct variants, namely the 577-horsepower AMG GT 63 and the slightly tamer 469-horsepower AMG GT 55. Performance enthusiasts will be pleased to learn that the more muscular GT 63 can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in just 3.1 seconds, reaching an impressive top speed of 196 mph. On the other hand, the less potent GT 55 accomplishes the 0 to 60 mph sprint in 3.8 seconds and attains a top speed of 183 mph.
Specific pricing details for these new models are yet to be disclosed, but it's worth noting that the previous generation of this vehicle began at around $120,000.
This new coupe iteration takes the reins from its predecessors, including the popular AMG GT R. Under the hood, the 2024 AMG GT utilizes an updated version of the renowned 4.0-liter V-8 engine found in earlier models. This same engine also powers the recently reintroduced Mercedes-AMG SL, marking a continuation of its performance legacy.
Among the significant changes in this new iteration is the availability of an optional 2+2 seating configuration. This layout offers room for two additional passengers, provided they are of a compact stature, as the company suggests individuals "less than 5 feet tall" for this space. Notably, the car also debuts with AMG-performance all-wheel drive and showcases a retractable rear spoiler that seamlessly integrates into the trunk lid. At speeds exceeding 50 mph, the spoiler is designed to adapt to five different angles, optimizing handling dynamics and minimizing drag. The car's features list also boasts a novel ride control suspension, complete with roll stabilization and rear-axle steering as standard.
While Mercedes has not released the vehicle's exact weight, the addition of extra seats, all-wheel drive capability, rear-wheel steering, and a nine-speed transmission suggest that the 2024 AMG GT may surpass the weight of its 3,600-pound predecessor.
This unveiling follows a year of triumph for the German luxury brand, which had committed to catering to affluent clientele by streamlining its entry-level models. This strategic decision has yielded positive outcomes, with Bloomberg Intelligence analysis indicating that the average selling price of a Mercedes has surged by approximately 40 percent since 2019.
Enthusiasts can look forward to the AMG GT's arrival in the first half of 2024. It is anticipated to engage in close competition with vehicles such as the widely recognized Porsche 911 Turbo, a $197,200 coupe boasting 572 horsepower and an impressive 0-60 mph time of 2.7 seconds.
